Good finish work listens first: existing reveals, casing profiles, and floor species set the rules new work should follow, or deliberately, consistently update.

Order of operations

Floors, trim, and paint have a correct sequence that changes by material. Sequencing is invisible when right and permanent when wrong, it's half of what you're hiring.

Level of finish, stated plainly

Paint-grade poplar and stain-grade oak are different projects; site-built and shop-built built-ins are different budgets. We define the level in the scope so the proposal matches the picture in your head.

Permits & inspections

Purely cosmetic interior finish work generally doesn't require permits, but the line moves when scope touches structure, egress, or systems, and electrical or plumbing changes discovered mid-project are handled through the appropriate licensed trade partners with any required permits. We tell you plainly if your project crosses that line. Every home is its own case; nothing here is code advice for a specific property.

Questions homeowners ask

Can you match the original trim in our older home?

Usually yes, many traditional profiles remain available, and custom knives can reproduce ones that aren't. Where exact matching isn't economical, we'll show you the closest honest options and how to transition so the difference disappears.

Do you handle small projects, like one room or a set of built-ins?

Yes. Finish work is a legitimate project at any size, a single room refresh, a mudroom bench, a wall of bookcases. Small projects get the same scope clarity and standards as large ones.

Should we refinish our hardwood floors or replace them?

Solid hardwood can usually be refinished several times, and refinishing often beats replacement on both cost and character. Wear-through, deep damage, or previous over-sanding change the math. We'll look and tell you honestly which side yours is on.

Can you build around our not-square old walls?

That's what scribing is for, fitting new work to old realities so built-ins and trim look grown-in rather than dropped-in. Crooked houses deserve craftsmen who expect crooked.

Do you also paint, or do we need a painter?

Finish carpentry deserves finish painting, so we coordinate or perform the final coats as part of the scope. One standard, one schedule, no gap where 'the painter will fix it' meets 'the carpenter left it.'

How disruptive is interior work while we live here?

Managed, if it's planned. We contain dust, protect paths, sequence room by room, and leave the house workable every evening. You'll know each week which rooms are ours and which are yours.
